“Tales Of Eyam’ is principally a human story – love and loss, resolution and self-sacrifice – each part of the human condition. Oka Vanga have recreated those qualities through sensitive music and song, and they’ve done it incredibly well. The bleak sadness and longing of ‘’Til the End (Emmott’s Song)’ reflects through the exquisite composition of music and lyric.” Tim Carroll, Folkwords.

I was the wife, and the soul left behind, If I was the mother of a child. If I was the man left with nowhere to hide, would I learn to fly? Carry me, through the darkest times. Carry me for a while. Won’t you carry me, through the unholy hours, Till I learn to fly, till I learn to fly. If I were a falling star in the night, If I was the Moon upon high, If I was the man left with nowhere to hide, would I learn fly? Carry me, through the darkest times, Carry me for a while. Won’t you carry me, through the unholy hours, Till I learn to fly, till I learn to fly.

"The Witching Hour" (Verse 1) Tonight the spirits wake her, every witching hour. The candle burns down the wick, and darkness forms no sound. Tonight the spirits wake her, every witching hour, in the house by the church in town. (Verse 2) Tonight tonight her sleep must come, even if it’s brief. She cannot bear to see the sun, as light begins to creep. Tonight tonight her sleep must come, bring her some relief, from the devil who plagues the street. (Chorus) Oh she prays for sleep, burning herbs and Rosemary sweet, Oh she prays for sleep, for the night will bring no peace.
3.
"'Til the End" (Emmott's Song) Sow dance with me now, Wear these flowers as your crown. Place your hand in mine our fingers entwine. Love will be your guide. Wedding bells on the wind, But for us birds will sing. From beneath the trees, no ring for thee. Our love will last till the end. Fly away lone Magpie. Find yourself a wife. Spread your wings and fly, So I might be a Torre bride. So the Cuckoo song brings Spring, Lazy days we linger in. Sweet the grass beneath our skin, Love will last till the end. Fly away lone Magpie. Find yourself a wife. Spread your wings and fly, So I might be a Torre bride.
4.
"Beyond This Life" (Rowland's Song) Somewhere the temples lay where they stood, Somewhere all charms lead the way, Somewhere the mountains are higher than Blue, Somewhere I’d like to go. The road is calling me, away to the west. I’ll go but don’t follow me, goodbye with a kiss No fools will find this heart of mine, Goodbye with a kiss . Do you know, who I am? Do you know where I’m coming from.? Do you know, who I am? Do you know where I’m coming from? The road is calling me, I’ll not stop to rest My hand holds a letter, you signed with a kiss Find the time, find the key, Goodbye with a Kiss. Do you know, who I am? Do you know where I’m coming from.? Do you know, who I am? Do you know where I’m coming from?

about

In the summer of 2011 we were on a road trip, driving our way through Derbyshire when we happened to stop in for a unscheduled tea break in the little village of Eyam. Secluded amongst the Pennines, we were immediately struck by the beauty of this tiny hamlet and the tragic story of love and loss that it had to tell. We heard, for the first time, of Emmott Sydell and Rowland Torre - filled with all the hopes and dreams of a young betrothed couple in 1665 and caught up in the village’s unfolding disaster. Such were the compelling details of this true love story, tinged with folk lore and the superstitions of the 17th century that we were moved and inspired to write an EP of songs dedicated to their memory.
