The third album from versatile duo Oka Vanga blends a rich palette of strings, frets, and percussion with a foot stomping groove.

Strong energetic guitar lines are framed with intricate threads of mandolin and ukulele to create a colourful set of eight songs and four instrumental traditional tunes that have good pace and variety. From the authentic groove of 'Beneath The Apple Tree', to the high energy of 'Seek & Run' Angie has a timeless voice that lends itself to the authenticity of her song writing and emotive lyrics.
Bows Of Yew is a visceral nod to their folk roots whilst the quiet artisan beauty of Johanna is offset by the foot-stomping free-wheeling Whisky For Sorrow.
Joyously vibrant, the self-titled album benefits from tracks mixed by LA producer Thomas Johansen and mastered by GRAMMY Award-Winning Mastering Engineer Steve Fallone at Sterling Sound. Recorded at Unit Studios by Nick Kuzoch, all but four of the tracks were completed before Covid lockdown. Undaunted by Covid restrictions the duo Angie & Will rigged up their spare room to record themselves and completed the album on schedule.

Stellar contributions from guest musicians Patsy Reid (violin, viola, cello) and John Parker (double bass) frame the album and there is a subtle mix of musical influences that gives Angie and Will's new album an exciting edge.

Released by Crazy Bird Records, OKA VANGA is due for official release on 26th March 2021 available on both CD and 12" Vinyl.

BENEATH THE APPLE TREE I wanna dance with you to a song we can sing. Float our dreams tied with love as string. I wanna hold your hand, beneath the Apple Tree. Stars of gold above our head, stars beneath our feet, music in our pocket, sipping cider sweet and I know it’s only you and me. Devil on my shoulder, taking all my hope, better off alone. The night I that I met you, the moonlight made him blind. Fate was on our side and all the signs were bold, moonshine cold , music in the air. London old time, midnight so right, only you and me. I wanna dance with you to a song we can sing, float our dreams tied with love as string. I wanna hold your hand, beneath the Apple Tree. "This song is influenced by the ancient folklore of apple trees, associated with love and health. I wrote this song for Will whilst recovering from surgery just as the first lockdown started in 2020, inspired by a overgrown orchard of old apple trees we sometimes walk through on our daily ramble."

Bows Of Yew 02:53
BOWS OF YEW A dark Yew Tree, marked on a yellow page, drops a poison berry where the fallen lay. Mothers tell the tale ‘go make your bows of yew, or the devil will find you’. Hold you’re your bows a little higher, or the devil will find you. Hold your bows a little higher, or the devil will find you. We got bones in the walls of Brent Pelham. We got bones forming crosses in the sky. We got bones rolling on and on in the rivers, bones rising high. The devil that would steal a man from his broken shoes. Holding nothing in his hand, fire in the roots. Houses gonna crumble, run but it’s no use, for the devil will find you. Bones in the walls of Brent Pelham. Bones forming crosses in the sky. Bones rolling on and on in the rivers, bones rising high. So hold you’re your bows a little higher, or the devil will find you. "This song is influenced by the ancient folklore of Yew trees, typically associated with their prominent position next to churches to ward off evil. Yew is also the best European timber for longbows, and has been the main wood used in European bows since Neolithic times. The ‘bones in the walls of Brent Pelham’ refer to the tomb of Piers Shonks found still today in the old church. It is a wonderful local Hertfordshire story of Piers who, I have read, was a night who slayed a serpent dragon that had it’s cave beneath an ancient Yew tree. To protect his soul forever more he was buried ‘between heaven and hell’ within the walls of the church."

WHISKY FOR SORROW I’m a restless soul, and I’ve been told I need to settle down. By this old sea, room for me, rhythm in the life I’ve found. Drinking apples from cider jars, throwing away the key. Gonna sleep amongst ragged roots, dance by the trees. Whisky for sorrow, rum to keep me sweet, a song for a country dance around the hollow tree. I’m a restless soul and I wanna hold your magic in my hand. So follow me, we’re heading east, to the place where it all began. The road is long, I’m singing away through fields of yellow green. Gonna play guitar, bar to bar, so dance with me. The road is long, I’m singing away, through fields of green, to the hollow tree. Dark rum, dark rum, give me whisky and rum. Gonna play guitar in the ‘Pack ‘O Cards’, dance on the hill. Whistle a tune in the ‘Old Half Moon’, drink my fill. The road is long. I’m singing away through fields of yellow green. Gonna play guitar, bar to bar, so dance with me. Whisky for sorrow, rum to keep me sweet, a song for a country dance around the hollow tree.

Seek and Run 03:13
SEEK AND RUN A man I hardly know tells me where he’s from. He can see in the dark. A man so quiet, he travels alone. Like a bird so free, he’ll never touch the ground. In this world so quiet, he deafens out the crowd. Seek and run, from the tide. Seek and run from the tide, seek and run. Whilst the shore’s on fire you gotta seek and run. With a sound so deep you think you’re gonna drown. Whilst the shore’s on fire you gotta seek and run. Seek and run from the tide, seek and run from the tide seek and run. Seek and run from the tide, seek and run, run , run from the tide.

Johanna 04:25
JOHANNA Johanna unpicks her wool, three times or more. Little boy is growing fast, walking from a crawl. He’ll need a sweater for the spring, jumper for the fall, jersey to play in the cold, go kart down the hill. She unpicks her sun yellow wool, riding the bus into town. She unpicks her son yellow wool, 3 times or more she’ll knit that wool, kinks and all. Johanna, Johanna, I see what you do, mixing Yellow with Indigo, Violet with Blue. Johanna, Johanna, you do you do, mixing Yellow with Indigo, Violet with Blue. You unpick your sun yellow wool, riding the bus into town. You unpick your son yellow wool, three times or more you’ll knit that wool, kinks and all. Little boy, nearly 12, likes to play outdoors, needs a sweater for the spring, jumper for the fall. That yellow wool is going fast, striped with indigo, knitting by memory, weaving plain and pearl. She unpicks her sun yellow wool, riding the bus into town. She unpicks her son yellow wool, three times or more she’ll knit that wool kinks and all. Her Little boy now a man, car keys in the hall, wears a shirt of apple green, jumper from the store. Quilt at night on his bed sewn with yellow wool. Ferryman took his mum young at 44. She unpicked her sun yellow wool, riding the bus into town. She unpicked that sun yellow wool, her memory in plain and pearl.

BLUE SKY IN OUR VEINS I don’t know what tomorrow’s gonna bring. And I can’t see that this chain is gonna break, with those footsteps on the floor marking decisions we all make. There’s a bed and a pillow but no sleep. Paper cups as we wait too tired to think. Counting stars upon the floor, one a million, you and me. And I see Green for Hope, Purple for Pain, Blue for the Sky, after the Rain. Blue Sky running in our veins while we’re fighting something we can’t even see. Use my shoulder as a pillow if you need time to think, time to breath. Counting stars upon the floor, one in a million you and me. And I see Green for Hope, Purple for Pain, Blue for the Sky, after the rain. Blue sky running in our veins while we’re fighting something we can’t even see.

Bluebird 02:57
BLUEBIRD Hey little bluebird are you shy of the ground? Are you scared of the land, don’t you wanna be found? You fly, so many miles. You fly without touching the ground.I wanna know what you know, see what you see, little bluebird don’t fly to high.I wanna know what you know, see what you see, little bluebird don’t fly too high.Hm, little blue bird, do you wonder out loud? Are you scared of the land don’t you want to be found? You fly, so many miles you fly, without touching the ground. When do you stop, when there’s nothing but fire? When do you stop, when there’s smoke in your eyes? When do you stop, when you’re feeling tired of that concrete sky? Don’t fly to high too high, so you can’t be found.
